One day Jama gets in a fight with his mother and leaves home to live on the streets. Here he becomes friends with Shidane and Abdi and the three of them steal food, sleep and play together. It isn't until Jama and Shidane get into a horrible fight that this all ends and Jama is once again left to fend for himself on the streets.
Jama decides that he must find his father and so he begins a journey to the Sudan. Along the way clansmen help him out by feeding him and giving him places to sleep for the night. He is also befriended by strangers who are intrigued by his story to find his father.
Throughout Jama's tale, despite what problems are placed in his path, Jama remains optimistic and relatively happy. This is a wonderful story of how enduring a person can be.
